Surprise! Michiganian isn't 'Island' killer
Mekeisha Madden Toby / Detroit
News Television Writer
For weeks, it seemed like J.D. Dunn was the bad guy on CBS' horror
series "Harper's Island."
But the real serial killer murdered that notion when he hacked up
the poor Goth and left him to die on the docks in an episode that
aired a couple of Saturdays ago.
Now we're sort of back to square one in terms of suspects -- there
are only so many wedding guests and Island residents left to accuse
-- and the only thing worse than that is the departure of Clinton
Township native Dean Chekvala.
Yes, it is true that a character dies every week on this show, but
why our guy?
Chekvala made J.D. the creepy, laconic outcast that we've bristled
at all this time and now, well, he's gone. His final episode aired
last week when he had to play J.D.'s corpse. Chekvala is a natural
blond, and the only physical memento he has left of J.D. are the
dyed black tips of his hair he's yet to cut off.
"Even though I knew it was coming, it was a little sad," the
graduate of Clintondale High School and Wayne State University told
The Detroit News over lunch this week. "The other people I was
watching it with didn't know my character was going to die, so
afterward, there was this weird moment where they all looked at me
like 'Awww.' "
When the episode ended, Chekvala, 31, the youngest of three,
received even more sympathy when his parents called him from
Michigan.
"They were like 'Are you OK?' " Chekvala said, adding that he would
have enjoyed the consolation a little more if his parents hadn't
started pumping him for answers. "Immediately after they found out I
was fine, they started asking 'So, um, who is the killer?' "
Of course, Chekvala couldn't tell them. He can't tell anyone. A
secrecy agreement with the Eye network contractually guarantees his
silence.
Besides, when the two-hour series finale airs July 11, Chekvala
wants everyone to be just as surprised as he was.
"That's the whole point," he said, flashing a smile as mischievous
as any J.D. would've given. "I don't want to ruin it for anyone."
